Lucky Routes and Roads to Avoid: Trucker Folklore Mapped

Every trucker has a story—and some roads seem to collect more than their fair share. Over the years, a kind of trucker folklore has emerged: highways that bring good luck, backroads to avoid, and stretches of pavement where strange things tend to happen.

While there’s no GPS for superstitions, we mapped out some of the most well-known lucky routes and roads truckers avoid, based on stories passed down from driver to driver.

Lucky Routes (According to the Legends)

I-80 through Nebraska

Said to be smooth sailing with friendly scales and wide-open views. Veteran drivers swear it’s “a good place to make up time and make peace with your logbook.”

US-60 in Arizona

Known for wide shoulders, clear skies, and a few unexpected roadside blessings—like a diner that always seems open, no matter the hour.

I-10 Eastbound near San Antonio

Folklore says if you see a shooting star on this stretch, your next delivery will go off without a hitch. Just watch for deer.

Roads to Avoid (If You Believe the Talk)

Route 666 / US-491 (New Mexico)

Once known as the “Devil’s Highway,” this road had so many strange accident reports it was eventually renamed. Even with a new number, some truckers still won’t take it at night.

I-95 in the Northeast Corridor

Not haunted—just hectic. Congestion, tolls, impatient four-wheelers… this stretch has a reputation for fraying nerves and pushing ELD limits.

Highway 33 in California

Long, remote, and often used by newer drivers. Many say it’s “bad luck for breakdowns,” especially in summer heat. It may just be tough terrain, but the stories say otherwise.

Why These Stories Matter

Trucker folklore is part of what makes this job more than just a paycheck. It’s a community—one built on long hauls, odd experiences, and miles of shared wisdom. Whether you believe the legends or just enjoy the storytelling, there’s value in knowing what’s been passed down.
